Second Semester

As we start the second semester of the school year, I am proud to share that Awesome Olsen students are performing higher than they were at the same time last year. This growth reflects the hard work of our students, the commitment of our teachers, and the support of our families.

We continue to focus on high quality instruction, intentional planning, and academic interventions to strengthen teaching practices and increase student achievement. For teaching and learning to have the greatest impact, students must be in school all day, every day. The school day starts promptly at 7:05 a.m., and being present, on time, and ready to learn is essential to continued success.

Students are reminded that from January 6th, there are 73 instructional days until FAST PM3 testing begins. Every lesson, assignment, and intervention during these 73 days is part of the recipe for finishing the year strong.

Our Viking Values shine at the heart of Awesome Olsen, guiding how we learn, how we treat one another, and the proud culture we strengthen each day. We encourage students to be leaders in keeping our campus safe and caring by remembering that if they see, know, or hear something, to say something. The adults on campus are here to support our students and help them grow academically and personally. When challenges arise, students are encouraged to see an adult they trust for guidance, because every problem is an opportunity to learn effective solutions and build confident problem solvers. Through open communication and strong support from home and school, our students develop thoughtful decision-making skills, resilience, and the belief that they are never alone on the path to success.

Olsen is one of the few middle schools without a uniforms/unified dress code. All families in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades will receive a link to vote on the proposal for the 2026–2027 school year. Uniforms support safety, equity, and school pride. Your voice will help shape this important decision.

A strong school/home partnership is part of the recipe for student success. Parents can support us by ensuring their child is adhering to the BCPS Code of Student Conduct with respect to:

· Wearing their student IDs every day

· Following the dress code expectations

· Upholding the rules for personal technology, keeping devices off and stored in backpacks during the school day

I look forward to our continued partnership as together we are one team with one goal—student success. Thank you for choosing Awesome Olsen for your child’s middle school years. With excellence in our classrooms and strong involvement from home, the best is yet to come.

All the Best,
