Our History

Olsen Middle School is located in the heart of Dania Beach, Florida. The City of Dania Beach borders Ft. Lauderdale to the north and Hollywood to the south. We are approximately one mile from the Atlantic Ocean.

Olsen Middle School has been a cornerstone of the South Broward community since 1954. In the early 1990s, the School Board of Broward County purchased land next to the original campus to build a new, state-of-the-art facility. By 1994, students and staff had officially moved into the new building.

At the time, enrollment was close to 2,000—more than the new campus could accommodate. While the original plan was to demolish the old building and replace it with athletic fields, the Olsen community made a different choice: to preserve the original campus as a dedicated sixth-grade center. This decision eased overcrowding and gave sixth-grade students a unique opportunity to grow in a focused environment before transitioning to the main campus.

In February 2021, demolition of the original building finally began. Through a partnership with the City of Dania Beach, a new, state-of-the-art athletic facility will be constructed on the site, with work set to begin in spring 2026. The facility will feature a six-lane, 400-meter padded regulation track and a multi-use turf field. Additional amenities will include basketball, pickleball, tennis, and volleyball courts—providing students and the community with expanded opportunities for health, fitness, and recreation.

Today, more than 500 students and 75 faculty, staff, and administrators proudly call Awesome Olsen their home—and look forward to what’s ahead.
